More spooky art for Halloween

Because I’ve actually been doing a bit of drawing lately, here’s some more spooky art!

The vampire bat-cat, done in brush pens on watercolor paper. No, I don’t know where the idea came from. I just started drawing and this is what came out.

Medusa and Bats. This one was inspired by a cartoon of Medusa that I saw in Ben Caldwell’s book Fantasy! Cartooning and by the book Boris and Bella, illustrated by Gris Grimly. I did the sketch last year, and only recently scanned it into the computer to paint it in Photoshop. The painting has been slow going, as you can see, but I work on it a bit at a time whenever I can. I’m hopeful this will turn out well.

Hope you’re all having fun! I uploaded this a day in advance, so right about now I’m probably at the Rally to Restory Sanity and/or Fear. Hope everyone’s having a good weekend!

Rats! Episode 40 – Oops! My bad!

Actually, she does look macho. All women in uniform do, but when you slap ’em in a set of cadet greys, the effect is even more pronounced.

My apologies for not putting this week’s Rats! up yesterday. I was going to do it, but I had a podcast to finish and then Pixie’s preschool called me to tell me she was sick, and you know she was sick because she turned down a cupcake at lunch, and then I had some graphics commissions to finish because I’m leaving today for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, and did I mention we’re down to one car because my car is in the shop so the Hubster and I have had to play car tag all week so he could get to work and I could pick up the kids from school? It’s been an interesting week, to say the least.

Anyway, about women in uniform. I was always amazed at the reaction I’d get anytime people who knew me as a cadet, and later as an officer, saw me in civilian clothes. They’d just sort of freak out and say things like, “Oh my god! You have hair!” And I’d be like, “No duh! I have to braid it and put it up everyday before I get into uniform!” And they’d be like, “But seriously! You have all this HAIR!” I looked so different in civilian clothes that I actually got asked out on a date by one of my NCOs at a reserve unit function one time. The moment he realized who I was, he ran away screaming. I’m still not sure if I should have taken that as a complement or not.

I had a lot of hair back then. It came all the way down to the middle of my back, and it was very thick. And red. I love Miss Clairol. Now it’s still thick and red, but not quite as long. I cut a lot of it off after having the second child. It was just too much to deal with when I had a collicky baby on my hands. I’m growing it back again though, so maybe I’ll be able to braid it again come this summer. That would be nice.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ll be at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, and I’ll be wearing my supercool “Fear Me!” t-shirt. You can still get a “Fear Me!” t-shirt at Zazzle.com and all the profits from the shirt will continue to go to DonorsChoose.org. (BTW, they’re having a $5 off all shirts sale for Halloween, so BUY NOW!). Buy a t-shirt for that strong, macho woman in your life, and do something good while you’re at it!

ACW Episode 89 – Choices, choices…

So last week I had this weird virus thingy I was dealing with – aches and pains, a slightly sore throat, no energy whatsoever. Then just as I was getting over that, I got hit with a lovely, simply LOVELY case of insomnia. Three nights of staring at the ceiling, elbowing the Hubster in the ribs every time he flopped onto his back and started to snore. I just live for nights like that.

Not. I’m supposed to be up at 5AM most mornings to get a jump on work, and you know that between the virus thingy and the insomnia, that just didn’t happen. So now I’m scrambling to play catch up. Last night was the first decent night of sleep I’ve had in a while, and I’m groggy this morning, but at least I feel somewhat human. Come 5PM, I’ll probably be feeling more like that eggplant in panel one.

Hope you all have a good day and a good night’s sleep! I got to get on with my work.

Move It Mama Monday! I am a slug

Ugh. It’s Monday. I’ve had insomnia the last three nights and last week I had some weird virus thingy that pretty much sucked the life out of me and left me with aching joints, a sore throat and the chills. All of which has added up to a week with no exercise. No karate, no water aerobics, no Just Dance… Nada, zip, bupkis.

The last exercise I did was on last Monday when I went to the Y for my weekly swim. I got in a good 15 laps. Then on Tuesday I was feeling sort of puny. As I was getting ready for karate class, my stomach kicked in and said, “Oh no you don’t!” So I ended up putting my gi back in the closet and spending the rest of the day in bed. Honestly, it wasn’t a major bout of the flu. It was just this annoying sense of feeling unwell, accompanied by the aches and chills. Just enough to knock me out of my game, but not enough to leave me feeling guilt-free about not exercising. I kept thinking all last week that I’d get right back into the exercise mode because I really didn’t feel all that lousy. Just a little off. But then another symptom would pop up – sore throat, head ache, mild stomach cramps – and there I’d be lying in bed again, not wanting to do a damn thing, let alone exercise.

Then the insomnia hit. It’s a hormonal thing, apparently, timed with my menstrual cycle. This means I can sort of predict when it will happen, but have no cure for it. I tried an over-the-counter sleep aid. All that did was leave me groggy and useless the next day. I tried just lying in bed. I was awake for hours and ended up groggy and useless again the next day. I know I ought to just get up and do something until I feel sleepy, but I’m afraid that would leave me even more wide awake, and I’m so tired I really don’t want to drag my sorry ass out of bed. I just want to lie there, and hope the Hubster doesn’t flop onto his back and start snoring like a bear again.

Anyway, I’ve just finished up my work for the morning and I’m contemplating what to do next. Should I exercise? Should I just curl up and nap? Decisions, decisions.

Let’s see if I can’t force myself through a few rounds of Just Dance, maybe a little stretching. Then I’ll take a hot bath and nap for a bit. Or maybe, I’ll actually wake up and do something useful. We’ll see.

Sunday Contentments – A job well done! And well appreciated too!

I’ve been working like mad on book covers the past couple of weeks for a client of mine. This weekend I got the final sign off on one of my favorites. It’s the artwork for Mark Jackman’s “Fistful of Rubbers,” book two in the Sid Tillsey Chronicles. I also did the cover art for book one, “The Great Right Hope.” These are both vampire books of a very special nature. Basically, if you hate Twilight, these are for you.

Anyway, here’s the cover art for “Fistful of Rubbers.”

This particular project gave me a bucketload of trouble. First, my original DAZ Studio file of the main character would not open, so I had to recreate him from scratch. That was a pain in the ass. Then DAZ Studio refused to open up one of the new characters I had created for the cover, just 2 days after I had created it! I could understand the first one. I was trying to open the file on a different computer, I was using a new version of DAZ Studio, the file was over 2 years old, etc. 3D files do get a little cranky, especially files that have a lot of supporting files attached to them that have to be present for the main file to work. But a new file not opening up?! You gotta be kidding me! I swore so hard about that one, I blistered the paint on my office walls. Then I dug through the forums at DAZ Studio to figure out what had gone wrong. Thank god I’ve got a brain and I’ve been working with these programs for a few years, because it took quite a bit of sleuthing to figure out what the problem was. I got it all fixed in the end, and managed to get my 3D renders done so I could move on with the job of compositing, painting and texturing all the characters together. I think the end result turned out very well!

Anyway, both “A Fistful of Rubbers” and “The Great Right Hope” are published though LL-Publications. “Fistful” will be out November 15th, so be sure to get a copy! And let me know what you think of the artwork. I’m very happy with this one. I think it turned out just right.

Spooky art for Halloween

I’ve been doing a bit more art lately, mostly just doodles in various notebooks, but some have turned out very interesting.

Medusa:

Demoness:

Basically, all I’m doing is grabbing a cheap sketch pad and a brush pen and just drawing freehand with no real plan. I like the quality of line I get with the brush pen, and I like not using a pencil because it forces me to draw without wasting time on mistakes. If I screw up a line, then I just have to work it into the sketch. That’s what happened with the Demoness, thus the bandages around her throat. It worked out pretty well, I thought!

I’ve been thinking about doing more stuff like this – no pencil, just draw and go. I’ve got another image I’ll scan in for later this week, done with color markers no less! Not lots of color, but enough to make it pop, I think. And it’s spooky too.

Anyway, enjoy the artwork. Hopefully I will get some time to paint these in Photoshop and then show them off again.

I’m in the Myths & Magic anthology and Nerdvana!

I just got a box with my author copies of Myths and Magic: Legends of Love, from Dreamspinner Press. This includes my story “The Sower and the Reaper.” I just have to say, the time I submitted my story to the time I got paid and got my author copies was less than three months. I have NEVER seen a publisher move so smoothly or so fast. I’m very happy with how the book turned out. See how happy I am?

Okay, I look a little bleary, but that’s because I have a virus-thingy right now. On the inside, I am very, very happy!

Myths and Magic is available in ebook and print paperback. Get your copy today!

Aaaaaand while I’m on the subject of anthologies, I’ve got an interview up at Fred Towers’ blog. Fred is the editor of Nerdvana, a gay erotica anthology about smart guys and the guys who love them. My story “Bully on the Playground” is in this anthology. Visit Fred’s blog here! Nerdvana is available in paperback and in Kindle format at Amazon.com

Rats! Episode 39 – Ah, refreshments

After having been such a downer last week, ranting about the ills of alcohol and under-aged drinking, I must confess this week that I did end up at some parties I never should have been at. I still say, “Don’t drink!” But hey, I’m not completely innocent in that department myself. Not that I ever drank before the age of 21, but like I said, I went to some rather… interesting parties.

Not much major going on this week, except for getting ready for the March To Keep Fear Alive! I don’t know how many folks from Virginia Tech plan to head up to DC on 30 October, but me and mine will certainly be there. If you go up there, be on the look out for a woman with horns, demon wings, and a killer smile. No seriously, my smile has caused people to die in fright. Aaaaaaand, I’ll also be wearing my “Fear Me!” t-shirt, which you can also buy from Zazzle.com. Profits from the shirt sales go straight to DonorsChoose.org. So if you’re a strong, scary woman or if you know a strong, scary woman, buy a shirt and do something good while you’re at it.

ACW Episode 88 – Knitting in public

Two things have surprised me about learning to knit. The first is the number of people who express surprise that I can knit when they see me doing it in public. Not surprise as in, “Oh wow, I didn’t think you had enough brain cells to be able to do something like that.” But more like, “Holy cow! What is that bizarre activity you’re doing? I could never do that!” Why people think they can’t knit is beyond me, as the basics are pretty… well, basic. Things do get more complicated, but you sort of work up to that. Which brings me to surprise number two.

Naughty knitting patterns. I knew about the penis cozies. I can’t recall who told me about them, but I had heard of them before. What I wasn’t aware of was the patterns for lingerie, stockings, garter belts, etc. I keep finding fun new patterns that I want to try, and I’m just waiting to get busted while knitting one of them at my daughter’s Catholic school. Nuns don’t scare me, just so you know, but it does hurt when they hit you in the back of the head with an eraser.

And speaking of things nuns wouldn’t approve of, here are my boobs again…

If you have not yet bought your “Fear Me!” t-shirt, you can still get one! I’m going to keep these t-shirts available on Zazzle.com for the indefinite future, because I’m hoping they’ll sell well and send some much needed money to DonorsChoose.org. This is the shirt I’ll be wearing at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, and since I’m obviously going in hopes of keeping fear alive, I’ll be tricked out in full cynical regalia, with the horns, the demon wings backpack, funky sunglasses, etc. Anyway, buy a shirt or donate directly to DonorsChoose.org, and do something good with your dirty, dirty money!

Move It Mama Monday! Just Dance 2!!!!!

If you read any of my tweets last Wednesday, you know I finally got my copy of Just Dance 2, and that I started playing it just as soon as I could tear the wrapper off. Hubster and the kids and I got right to it, jumping in with James Brown’s “I Feel Good.” I kid you not, Just Dance is a terrific game, but Just Dance 2 really kicks things up a few notches. The dance routines are more challenging, though the motion detection seems to be better at catching your moves. The songs are terrific, although there are one or two that I’m not as likely to play, unlike the original game. But that’s okay, because Just Dance 2 offers the option of downloading new songs from an online store! We haven’t downloaded the first song yet, but it’s a Katie Perry song, and given how much Pixie loves “Hot & Cold” in Just Dance, I’m certain we’ll be downloading this new song very soon.

Other things to like about the new version of Just Dance. There’s a “Sweat Mode” that tracks your level of effort as you dance. You’re given the option of easy, medium or hard levels which set a goal is “sweat points” for you to achieve in a week. Then you get to pick which songs you want to dance to and the game lets you know how hard you worked after each song. I like this a lot, except for the fact that the game is tracking effort level in sweat points as opposed to estimated calories burned. I have no idea how many calories a sweat point is worth, and that’s what I usually go by in other programs like Wii Fit Plus or Gold’s Gym Dance Workout. But since I am soaking wet by the time I’ve danced to a few songs, I’m pretty certain I’m burning enough calories to maintain my level of fitness and my weight.

There’s also an “endless shuffle” mode in Just Dance 2. Endless shuffle selects the songs at random and keeps playing them until you finally tell the game to stop. It’s a good way to work through all the songs and saves on time spent arguing over which song to play next (something that happens quite frequently when I play with the girls).

There are also various challenge modes so players can compete against each other, just like in the original game. We haven’t bothered with these yet and probably won’t. Our goal when we play is to get everybody up and moving, not necessarily to see who’s the best at dancing. This lets everyone play as much as they want, and gives an individual the option of sitting out on a particular song if you like. We sometimes have 5 people dancing at any given time, since we often play when Mich comes over for dinner. That means 4 of us will have Wii-motes and the fifth will just dance along. Usually one of the girls will drop out for a bit and pass their Wii-mote on to whichever adult doesn’t have one, so it works out.

Other notes – you can set your own name in the game, or just go with whatever name the game assigns, like Funky or Sunny or Baby. I ended up putting a name in for me when I set up the Sweat Mode for the first time. You can change names at any point if you hand off the Wii-mote to someone else, like we tend to do. There’s also a few songs that are done as duets. These are nicely choreographed, so that dancers are actually dancing with each other as well as interacting with the game. The girls in particular like April Lavigne’s “Girlfriend,” which includes a few cat-fight like moves in it. The animation and graphics are really nice too. “Cosmic Girl” and “Monster Mash” have some fun animations in them that really add to the song.

So over all, we really, really enjoy the game. In fact, I only have two criticisms of it. First, it looks like only one person at a time can play the Sweat Mode. I’ll have to double check to be certain, but on my first try, I couldn’t see a way to log in Pixie so she could play with me (not that she needs to sweat, being the skinny little four-year-old imp that she is).

My second criticism, and this one is big, is that the game includes a song that is not suitable for kids. The song “Tik-Tok” is definitely not a kid friendly song, and if Hubster hadn’t recognized it when he saw it on the play list, chances are good I would have played it while the kids were around and regretted it later. I’m not saying Just Dance 2 should not include more adult songs, but a rating on the song or an option to play the game in endless shuffle mode without including adults-only songs would have been nice.

Otherwise though, the game is good! We played on Friday night for 90 minutes and we were all dripping with sweat and having a good time. I highly recommend both versions of the game, but Just Dance 2 is definitely an improvement on an already good game.
