The Science of Sex -Homosexual Necrophilia in Ducks and a Haunted Scrotum

Friday, June 11th, 2010

My apologies for not posting a Science of Sex post last week. Balticon really had me wiped out. Since I missed last week, I have two goodies for you this week. No, I said goodies, not boobies. Yes, I realize for some of you they are the same thing. Okay, for a lot of you they are the same thing. Can we move on, please?

These lovely scientific tidbits come from Improbable Research, research that makes people laugh and the think. I met Julia Lunetta, the webmaster for Improbable Research, at Balticon and was thrilled to hear about this site. If you haven't heard of it yet, Improbable Research looks at all sorts of things you won't find in the regular science news, including my picks for this week...

Homosexual Necrophila in the Mallard Duck and the Case of the Haunted Scrotum. The first item includes a video about the researcher who saw the ducks in action, and the second includes a link to the article with a picture of said haunted scrotum.

No, I am not making these up. Seriously, click on the links and go see for yourself!

Here's my thoughts on these two items. First, I have seen mallard ducks in action during mating season, and it is not a pretty sight. Male mallards mate violently with females and I've seen some males rape a female to death. So I would believe that a male mallard duck would commit such an act on a fellow dead duck. But why should the mating habits of mallard ducks, however bizarre, matter? As the video mentions, seeing such behavior enacted in the wild ought to make us think about the sexual behavior of all species. At Balticon, I talked to someone about the Science of Sex post I did on how male antelopes trick female antelopes into sticking close during their mating season. One of the things we both noticed is that this behavior is not just limited to antelopes. We'd both seen it acted out by human men. In other words, we're not as removed from wild animal behavior as we think, and maybe studying unusual animal behavior might clue us in on how we work as well.

As for the scrotum, I have no frikkin' clue. I mean, seriously? That's one scary testicle, but I have no idea what it means right now. But there's got to be a killer story in there somewhere, and remember, that's what Science of Sex is all about; looking at science for inspiration to write really good erotica!

Take some time to look through the Improbably Research website. Julia was great to talk to, and the website is fantastic!

Rats! Episode 22 – Bad Hair Day

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

I remember watching lots of guys get their hair cut in the dorm hallways by other cadets. After my own experience with the local barber, I completely understand why. Still, getting your bud to give you a haircut did not guarantee you'd come out looking good. 'Nuff said.

ACW Episode 71 – Why Mama Drinks

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

This one is so true it's almost painful. For the record, I only drink a glass of wine about once every couple of months, but when I drink it, it's because I've really been pushed to the limit by the kids, work, house cleaning... everything.

We've all had those days, I'm sure. Days where there's more whine than wine. Lately, the girls have both been driving me nuts, especially Pixie. Every other word out of her mouth is "NO!" The words in between are all "WAAAAAAAAAAH!!" And this has been going on for weeks now. We took her to a local Greek festival on Friday and could not get that kid to do anything. Didn't want to try the food. Didn't want to sit down and watch the dancers. Didn't want to look at the craft stalls. Didn't want to go on the jumbo slide with her sister. Didn't want go home. Didn't want to stay. All evening long. After two hours, I was at my limit. I told Hubster I was going into the church to buy some pastries and then we were all heading home. He handed me a couple of twenties, which I thought was odd until I got inside and saw they were also selling bottles of Greek wine. So I bought wine and pastries and Hubster laughed when I came back out and he saw the bottle.

"I knew it!" he said.

"Hell yes you knew it! Why else would you hand me an extra $20? How much baklava do you think we could eat?!"

Any way, Pixie is still fussy and farty, and Princess is still chawing my ear off about her sister keeps copying her fart noises (among other things), and I still have 2/3rds a bottle of red Greek wine. I wonder how long that bottle will last.

Move It Mama Monday! Plans for summer workouts

Monday, June 7th, 2010

In two weeks, school lets out and the kids are home with me all day! Yay! And AUGH! What am I going to do with two children at home all day? How am I going to keep them occupied and keep me from going crazy?

Well, I've actually put quite a lot of thought into that first question (what to do with them), and as for the second (how do I keep from going crazy), all I can say is, "Too late!"

But seriously, I have been making plans for the summer, especially in regards to my workout routine. I have options, thankfully. And I have a very clearly defined goal - my third degree black belt test. Now I just need to put together the plan.

So today's post is me thinking out loud, if you will. First up, I've made arrangements for Princess and Pixie to stay with our preschool provider down the street two days a week. Pixie's preschool teacher is a lovely lady with a big garden and I know she'll get the girls outside to play. Also, two days a week for both girls won't break the bank. So on Tuesday and Thursday, the days I need to be at the dojo, I won't have to worry about dragging the kids with me to sit through 2 hours of class at a time.

As for the rest of my workout plan, I'm planning to get my other big workouts done in the morning before the girls get up. I prefer early morning workouts, so I've told Hubster I intend to be up by 5:30 AM so I can head out the door to exercise. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, this workout will be a 20-30 minute run plus a 20-25 minute karate practice. We have a tennis court in the neighborhood and I like to run there, practice, and then run home. As for Tuesday and Thursday mornings...

Well, here's where things get hard. I want to keep up with my water aerobics classes, but I also need to clear the mornings so I can stay home with the girls. I could take them to the Y with me and drop them off at the child watch facilities there, but Pixie hates that, and honestly, that takes such a huge chunk out of the day. I'd really rather get my workouts done early in the morning and have the rest of the day to stay home with the girls or go on a day trip with them. Since Tuesday and Thursday will already be eaten up by karate classes, and since those are the days my favorite water aerobics instructor teachers early morning classes, I'm thinking of toughing it out and going to the Y at 6 AM on those days. Yep, that's right. I'll be putting in three solid hours of hard core exercise on those two days. Fortunately, those are the days I won't have to deal with the kids at home, so I think this will work, especially since I'm also planning on scheduling some serious nap time for those two afternoons.

I do plan to add in a second, lighter workout on MWF, probably sticking with Walk It Out, Wii Fit Plus, maybe some Gold's Gym Cardio Boxing or EA Sports Active. Whatever I do in the afternoons, it will be short and it will happen after the girls and I are done playing outside, working on the garden, and going out on day trips. Weekends I'm planning to keep workouts very light, maybe only a session of Walk It Out on Sundays and nothing at all on Saturday.

So, I've got my workouts cut out for me. Hopefully this plan works out, because I need the exercise and I really do need to push myself in terms of karate practice and classes.

Sunday Contentments – Caterpillars and butterflies

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Once again, Sunday finds me relaxing on the sofa with my netbook and a cup of tea close at hand. It's been an exhausting week. I spent most of it trying to catch up on work after returning from Balticon 44 (from which my head is still reeling). Add to that Pixie's birthday (she's now four and all grown up, or so she tells me) and the attendant cupcake baking, present shopping, and special day out, and you've got one exhausted mama.

However, it's still been a good week. In addition to Pixie's big day, we also had another special event happen on Friday. Over the last few weeks, we've been raising a caterpillar that was given to us by our good friend Mich. Mich found a swallowtail butterfly laying eggs in her backyard and she brought over a parsley spring with one egg on it. We watched that tiny speck go from egg to minuscule caterpillar to giant caterpillar and then to chrysalis. It was all very fascinating, and the whole process finally came to fruition on Friday afternoon when the chrysalis opened and out came a butterfly. Here are a few pics of Papilio polyxenes, the Black Swallowtail butterfly (click on the picture to see a larger view).

The chrysalis, just a couple days before emergence. It started out very bright green then got darker. I was informed that the darker it got, the closer we were to having a butterfly come out.

The butterfly, shortly after emerging. It happened very fast. I came down from the office and checked on the chrysalis (we kept it in a butterfly habitat on our kitchen table) then headed up to the bedroom for a few minutes. When I came back, there was this huge, brightly colored miracle resting in the habitat. And man, was it vivid!

The butterfly, pumping up its wings in the habitat. The habitat is a sort of mesh hamper with a clear vinyl top that zips closed. We bought it at Lowe's Hardware. It came with a certificate for Painted Lady Butterfly caterpillars. However, the same day this butterfly emerged, I found four more caterpillars on one of the plants on my back deck. So I moved them into the habitat that morning. It sort of made me feel like an apartment manager, waiting for one tenant, the swallowtail, to move out while the new tenants moved in.

Our final look at the Black Swallowtail butterfly. From what I've seen on the web, our butterfly was a female. We brought her out to the back deck and released her from the habitat. She then fluttered to the ground and stayed there for a while. We were getting ready to head out for dinner that evening, so we left her there. She was gone before we even got into the car. Good luck butterfly, wherever you are!

The new tenants in our butterfly habitat. This one is resting in Mich's hand. She came over last night and I gave her two of our new caterpillars, along with a dwarf curry plant and a mallow plant. I suspect these are American Painted Lady caterpillars, but can't say for certain at this point. This time around, I'm going to document their growth through the caterpillar and chrysalis stage so I'll have more pictures to show. The whole experience was rather thrilling. Mich has some more swallowtail caterpillars at home and I think I just may take her up on her offer to get a couple of them for our habitat (and I may just break down and get a cheap aquarium as she suggested, especially if I find any more eggs or caterpillars in our garden).

Bottom line, this experience has set the tone for our summer. Princess and Pixie were fascinated with the caterpillars and checked on them every day. Myself, I can easily see us picking up a couple of butterfly and insect guides for the summer and spending time looking for what's right in our own backyard. I'm even considering at this point working on making our backyard a certified Backyard Habitat. In any case, I think it's safe to say this will be the Summer of Science.

Mich managed to capture some video of one of her butterflies coming out of the chrysalis. You can find it here. She set the camera up to tape while she was out, so skip ahead to about 24 minutes in to see the butterfly emerge.

Rats! Episode 21 – LOST

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Click on the thumbnail above to see the cartoon.

Yea verily, I am seriously behind this week on blog posts, and this one almost didn't make it today. Blame it on Balticon, people. That con wipes me out every year.

But I did get this week's episode of Rats! up before the end of the day. I dedicate this episode to all LOST fans who were frustrated by the series finale. Personally, I thought it worked with only a few minor flaws, but I know some people are hopping mad about it. My condolences to you ;)

I spent many a weekend in Jefferson National Forrest with my Army ROTC unit, tramping through the woods, camping out in the snow and the rain, getting mud in all my various hard to reach spots, and eating lots of MREs, the ultimate in haute cuisine. And let me just say to this day, I do not miss it one bit. I hated going out on Field Training Exercises (FTX). I think those things were specifically designed to screw me over. I have said it before and I'll say it again. I was a lousy cadet. I made a fairly decent officer once I got into the actual Army, but ROTC was not for me.

Anyway, here's hoping all this past year's rats at the good ol' VTCC survived the year. Good luck being upper classmen next year. I've got cartoons all about that too.

Treed’s take on Balticon 44

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

My dear friend Treed created a bitstrip about his Balticon experience that I thought I would share with you, just so you could compare and contrast the two points of view. His comic is here - http://www.bitstrips.com/series/18339/read.php?comic_id=629085&sc=0.

By the way, if you're a fan of podcasting and podcast books, Treed's bitstrips offer some very funny insight into that realm. He's a funny guy. Really ;)

ACW Episode 70 – Oh Balticon!

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
Sorry today's cartoon is late. As you can see from the image above, there was a reason. Balticon is the biggest convention I go to every year. I love it. I love seeing everybody I know from writing and podcasting and webcomics. I love attending the panels and learning new things. I love doing and attending readings. And yes, I love the parties. The best party at Balticon is the one hosted by Chooch and Viv of the "Into the Blender" podcast. This year's theme was Sci Fi Prom. I just happened to come across an old costume of mine in the closet while I was packing last Thursday and I decided to bring it to the prom. The outfit had been in storage for 9 years or so, and I'd only worn it once because I got pregnant soon after that, so it seemed like it was time to wear it again. I was rather surprised at people's reactions to my outfit (all of which were overwhelmingly positive), especially since a) it's an old costume that's been in storage all these years and b) there were some really killer costumes at the prom. But I guess I must still have my costuming mojo because yours truly was crowned queen of the Sci Fi Prom. I promised Viv I'd crown next year's queen, just as soon as someone pried my tiara from my cold dead fingers. All in all, I had a great time. Here are a few quick photos from the con. Like me, there are a bit skewed and out of focus. Hopefully I will recover from such conditions even if the photos won't. My best friend, Mary, lacing me into my flame-print corset. She had way too much fun doing this. My reading on Saturday night. I bought the corset at Farpoint earlier this year. It's a good thing I decided to wear a shirt under it. I didn't realize how low the corset would settle once I was strapped in, and even with the shirt I worried about being "over-exposed." Kim, the Comic Book Godess. She's got a fantastic voice and writes and performs wonderful songs. She's also the founder of the Secret Society for Delayed World Conquest. My partner in crime, Nobilis Reed, at his book launch for Scouts on Saturday night. He hosted a fake orgasm contest and a massage contest. And yes, that was as intersting as it sounds. Find out more about Scouts and Nobilis at http://www.nobiliserotica.com/. Me and DDog at the Sci Fi Prom. DDog was probably one of the neatest, most fashionable people there, and by fashionable I mean he does his own thing and does it very well. He's dressed in this picture as the latest incarnation of the Doctor. I was dressed as the Empress Xena. And yes, I do get satellite TV on that headdress I'm wearing. To get OnStar, I just push the big red jewel at the top. The woman I would have voted for, for Sci Fi Prom Queen, the lovely J.R. Blackwell, who is probably one of the most creative and talented people I know. Photography, costuming, writing... She does it all. Mr. Snacky Cake, aka John Cmar, and Jared Axelrod, J.R.'s equally talented husband. Jared has a graphic novel coming out called "Fables of the Flying City" that I am very much looking forward to seeing. Meanwhile, Dr. John Cmar performs the best medical procedures, including the boob flattening he did on me the moment I arrived at Balticon. It was a very professional job, I tell you. My prom king, Dave Slusher of the Evil Genius Chronicles. I couldn't have been paired with a better guy. Vivid Muse, the hostess with the mostest at the Sci Fi Prom... And here's Viv's stud-boy, Chooch. He plays a mean bass! A dear friend of mine, Elf, whom I've known since college, and who's shown up at every event I've done in Maryland in the last three years. Love you, Elf! And last but far from least, podcaster and prolific author Nathan Lowell who's book "Quarter Share" is now out and is a must read. In this pic, Nathan is demonstrating his "Second Life He-Man" pose. Oy! Muy macho, Nate! I wish I'd had the chance to take more pictures, because this is just a small sampling of what went on this weekend. However the con goes by so fast! Maybe next year I'll be a little quicker with the camera.
